What's more plausible. 1) A military coverup of a crashed vehicle which could considerably improve the US's chances of air superiority or 2) A coverup of a crashed microphone which can listen in on distant nuclear tests. Baring in mind if you believe 2) - then ask yourself this. How likely is it that military personnel mistook a relatively small microphone and foil for a crashed saucer? Also, how likely is it that this crashed microphone made a big boom in the night? Also, how likely is it that the wreckage of the microphone were both spread over an area of 10 football fields and the wreckage was sent to labs for metallurgic testing? Why would that be done? Why also would a company specialising in metals, and the composition of metals, write a secret memorandum to Area51 for the acquisition of these metals and the order to write a false story in the press? Film manufacturers in the 1940s were able to detect nuclear bomb tests pretty much worldwide because everytime they produces batches of film around the time of a bomb test they would have bad batches where the film was already exposed. Of course they couldn't tell where but it was definitely understood how to detect them just by radiation.

The whole extraterrestrials crashing into earth was a pretty stupid conspiracy theory to begin with. Though it showed a lot of people in power how stupid the average person really is. I'd imagine the Roswell incident is more important to psychology which showed the potential of conspiracy theories that be used as a weapon in politics as it was recently used (Qanon, jan6th).
